Outside the Box Fitness

Welcome to the "Outside the box" challenge - a fitness challenge submitted by Day1 member RITA, whereby each person commits to doing something outside their normal exercise box. The approach is to find "What motivated me today" - a straight forward approach where members write what motivated them for exercise in each day and not necessarily care about the actual exercise or number of minutes/hours.

The idea is that focusing on what motivated the you is a way to get a better understanding of what works/doesn't work for getting you to take action. While we love it here at Day1, "just do it" just doesn't work for everyone all the time. We understand that before you "just do it", you've gotta wanna do it....so when one does do it, focusing on why they did it each time could potentially be motivating to do it again.

So don't focus so much on how many miles you ran, or how many sittups you may have done - let's just drop some thoughts on "what" got us to get active "today" throughout the month of May!

Go and get it! The Day1 Team & Rita

I did so-so to end off the challenge... staring to force myself to leave the office at a reasonable hour though so that should help going forward.
I just saw the email on the next challenge so I'm going to check that out now! :)

16" slate tile is heavy! I didn't finish as strong as I would like to, but I have made decent progress on the latest home renovation. This weekend I lugged a lot of tile, mortar, tools, etc. and event got out for a little more wakesurfing. If the sun breaks this afternoon I might have to get back to my jogging while lawn mowing :)

I guess that wraps this challenge - I look forward to the next.

Final days of the challenge...time to finish strong! As weather is putting the hold on mtn travel, I'm looking for some biking and water sport action for these last couple challenge days.

Rev it up and let's finish strong!

Been keeping up with dance, but not as much as I wanted to this week. Worked 12 hour days most days of this week and I missed classes and wound up crashing when I got home. I have GOT to make a change next week.

2 Belly dance classes plus 1 ballet class planned for Sat. and 2 belly dance classes on Sunday. Looking forward to it. :) Thinking of trying yoga on Sunday - there's a free class in town. Maybe I'll wind up loving it?

Jonathan, Did you get someone to run past you (to simulate you passing them) with water during this race? Did you turn on a fan too? LOL

Just crossed the midway point for this May Challenge! Way to stay with it, and here's to finishing strong!

My O.T.B. moment for this week: as I'm following the Amgen Tour of California (a legit multi-stage world cycling race in the USA) - it hit me, why not spin on my trainer while I "watch" people being active? That's the plan. I set the DVR to record the stages & I will put my bike on the trainer while I watch the play back.

Only thing I need now is the team car to give me water bottles and energy bars during the ride ;-)

Cheers,
Jonathan

My "outside the box" activity today was short 'sample' Turkish bellydance - a different style of bellydance that I do not have much experience in at all. It was fun and I'm actually going to try a second class. :)

Bryce - it was cool to see what wakesurfing is all about ... now I finally get it! it does look pretty fun and seems like a great workout... thanks for sharing the link!

Got way outside the box and tried a new watersport this weekend - Wakesurfing. After a couple days of wakeboarding it was a great way to relax and go low-impact. I have yet to drop the line and truly surf for any extended period of time, but I'll get there. Nothing like new challenges and new sports. If you want to see what "wakesurfing" is, check out Inland Surfer's website: www.inlandsurfer.com

quick post ... Thanks for the reminder of my accomplishments with dance, Bryce. :) I often forget that I used to blow it off completely ... but not anymore! And, btw ... 50 degree water!?! I don't know how you do it... yes, definitely outside the box.

Danced today ... finger cymbals class - was really cool n' challenging. I was motivated to go because I had a class to make up. glad I went!

Is it ok to find inspiration in ourselves and recognize that our own efforts might be outside the box?

Sometimes we get blinded by what our definition of "normal" is and fail to recognize the efforts we are putting in. Rita - you have been going strong for months with dance - pat yourself on the back, cuz you are really inspiring yourself! Jonathan - I think you have done a great job programming yourself to transition from season to season seamlessly - that is inspiring in itself, well done. And me, well I have tried to keep wakeboarding around the calendar because I may never be a great rider, but it is something that frees my mind and strengthens my body. I made it out 3 times last week and the water temp is still in the 50s - I think that's pretty out of the box.

Nice job everyone - give yourself a high-5 and keep on going.

Men's Golf League started up last night, we play weekly matches, anyway - my back and core aren't all that happy with me this morning...that said, I'm going to be looking for stretches and core movements to do during the day while working away at my desk!

Ballet class yesterday - motivated to go to class because I didn't want to fall behind... wanted to keep up with the class.

Rest days are good here and there - need to listen to the body at times :) I made it out yesterday for a great day of snowshoeing as seeing snow in the forecast just draws me to the hills...check daily fitness group for more on that.

Sounds like everyone is on the move! cool!

Yesterday, I didn't have any motivation at all ... actually, I that's not completely true. I was motivated but it was to rest and catch up on my sleep! Today, what motivated me to take dance was my curiosity ... I just couldn't wait to hear the music we'd dance to and also see what the choreography was going to look like.

Rita, I am completely with you. I too was once at the top of the pyramid. Now, life and desire have changed. While I want to be fit for life, I now understand that my fitness obsessions were once unhealthy. You hit the nail on the head - balance and moderation are key.

Today, my motivation was my 2 year old son. Though I am not one for taking long walks, I let him lead the way today. Seeing the world through his eyes and taking his steps, I extended my time in the fresh air and duration of the walk I normally would have lead.

Great work everyone, I look forward to the future posts. They are inspiring and thought provoking.

Right on Rita! I got my run in after watching the track meet...I was impressed that I saw no quit in any of those kids out there today. There was a pretty massive divide between those who were blazingly fast and those who weren't so - still though, those who lagged crossed those finish lines like it was the Olympics - GREAT TO SEE!!!
Rita Comment by Rita on April 29, 2010 at 7:43pm
hi D1, I used to be at the top of the pyramid ... Today I'm looking for better balance ... upper part of pyramid (to start with) in order to drop some weight and then mid pyramid to maintain without getting as obsessed as I used to be.

My motivation today --- today my motivation to go to ballet class was that I #1 had packed my work out clothes with me and could go straight to class from the office and #2 I decided to participate in the ballet recital and tomorrow is the first rehearsal :) :)

Rita...Where do you want to be on the "fitness pyramid"? A few at the top are obsessive, to be there you have to be driven. Those toward the bottom are largest in number and they are focused on something other than being fit. Find some level you belong between the top and the bottom. Humans have difficulty changing behavior, at first you may need to force yourself to do what is necessary, then the new behavior will become expected.... j

Love the concept Rita! Here's my first stab - I'm going to watch a Nephew's Track Meet this afternoon, so I'm going to use the spectatorship as my motivation to go on a jog afterwards. While I won't be hurdling, high jumping or running a relay - I'm motivated to lace up my runners and go and get it!
